Campus Resources for EDI Excellence

UNCG has a variety of key leadership positions and affinity groups that are instrumental in promoting excellence in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across our campus. We believe that EDI should be infused in everything that we do. We see diversity and inclusive perspectives in our curriculum and degree offerings. We offer quality programs for students. We challenge our faculty, students, and staff to engage and participate in this community. Take a moment to discover the many resources, people, and groups that are helping to promote EDI excellence and a healthy campus climate for our students, faculty, and staff.

Chancellor’s Fellows for Campus Climate

Dr. Andrea Hunter (term beginning 2020) and Dr. Julia Mendez Smith (term 2016-2021) are responsible for leading the University’s work around campus climate, especially with regard to issues of equity, diversity, and inclusive excellence. The fellows serve as key members of the administration, identifying opportunities, developing new initiatives, and collaborating with campus and community partners to strengthen and support a healthy campus climate at UNC Greensboro.

Faculty Senate Committee on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The Faculty Senate Committee on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion includes representation from each college or school at UNCG. The Faculty Committee addresses ongoing planning and implementation of the University’s equity, diversity, and inclusive excellence initiatives from a faculty perspective. The Committee specifically focuses on: (a) hiring practices to grow and develop a diverse faculty (i.e., as related to recruitment, retention, and mentoring underrepresented faculty), (b) cultural competence and responsiveness across the community and within curricula, and (c) discrimination based on age, race, gender, disability, religion, socio-economic status, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation. The Faculty Committee collaborates with the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusive Excellence.

The iBelong Project for Students

Launched in Spring 2019, the iBelong Project seeks to understand how students experience our campus now, and how to help the University better meet the learning, professional and personal needs of all our current and future students. The project utilizes the Culturally Engaging Campus Environments (CECE) survey developed by the National Institute for Transformation and Equity. Undergraduate students can participate in the iBelong Project by taking an anonymous feedback survey and attending campus climate discussion forums. Learn more and view the survey report.

Faculty Affinity Groups:

Alianza

Alianza is UNC Greensboro’s faculty and staff organization for Latinx and Hispanic issues. Since 2013, UNC Greensboro’s Alianza has been a gathering point for university employees who are interested in collaborating around issues that impact Hispanic/Latino staff, initiatives that enhance activity on campus related to the Hispanic/Latino cultures and communities – and they also serve as a network to support prospect and enrolled students. Alianza was named an Inspiring Affinity Group in 2020 by Insight into Diversity Magazine.

UNCG ACE Women’s Network

The ACE Women’s Network is a national system of networks within each state, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia with the goal of advancing and supporting women in higher education. Each state network is led by a state chair who works with institutional representatives and at least one presidential sponsor to develop programs that identify, develop, encourage, advance, link, and support (IDEALS) women in higher education careers within that state. The ACE Women’s Network facilitates the networking of women interested in pursuing leadership opportunities in higher education. Learn more about the UNCG ACE Women’s Network.
